Civic Social 8/21 + looking ahead
Fall events with KCLS Bothell and Kingsgate
Hi friends, I hope July treated you well. For me, the month was filled with fun house guests, time with family and friends, a week away to Lake Chelan, and a good dose of work and volunteering. I’ve been invited to help plan and lead some civic events this fall / winter, which I’ll share below. July also brought more time for reading. I’ve finally finished Michael Lewis’ fantastic, eye-opening book, “Who Is Government? The Untold Story of Public Service.” I listened to the audiobook, which is voiced by Lewis plus contributors Casey Cep, Dave Eggers, John Lanchester, Geraldine Brooks, Sarah Vowell, and W. Kamau Bell. It’s so good, and so interesting, that I’m reading it now in book form. Highly recommend! Sending civic love and hope to see you soon, |

The topic of birthdays came up at our June Civic Social, and we decided to throw a birthday party. You are all cordially invited (and welcome to bring a friend – RSVPs appreciated so we have a rough head count for cupcakes!) • Make a wish for yourself Plus: check out book recommendations for civic reading, make resource suggestions for community action, and explore the “six points of connection” from the US Chamber of Connection to improve our collective civic and social health. Come for the whole two hours or just drop in; would love to see you! |
Coming up…
3-4:30 PM, Sun. Oct. 5th and Sun. Nov. 2nd at Kingsgate Library Civic Lift sessions
Join neighbors, strangers, and friends to dream about the community we want, and do our part to help make it so. This two-part series uses a structured approach to identify personal strengths and values, leading to an individual action plan. Sponsored by Friends of the Kingsgate Library. In partnership with local Citizen University Civic Fellows. Civic Lift is a secular, nonpartisan gathering. For adults and teens. Register for each session.
2-4 PM, Sat. October 25th at Bothell Library
Bothell Community Action Fair
The first of what the library hopes to make an annual event. Let’s do some civic matchmaking! Connect with nonprofits local to Bothell and surrounding areas to learn about how you can take action in your community via volunteer opportunities and/or other means of support. For adults and teens. Register to receive an email reminder. Walk-ins are welcome. |

Leading Through Uncertain Times:
Turn Concern Into Action
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, Friday, January 16th
at Hotel Indigo, Everett • presented by Common Unity
You see problems that need solving - in your workplace, community and life. You want to make a difference. In these times, it’s hard to know where to start to create meaningful change. Start your 2026 focusing on solutions, not resolutions. With Civic/Community, Workplace, and Personal Leadership tracks. $199 for the full day, including lunch and materials. Organized by Kathy Solberg of CommonUnity (a fellow CU Civic Fellow!)

Sometimes civic engagement looks like wearing a rock-filled bucket and hiking up and down a trail! I LOVE volunteering at Mount Rainier National Park and am headed back up to camp and volunteer alongside a great group of women.
It brings me great joy to give back to the park this way each summer, particularly now, as budgets are so bleak.
When you think about how you want to contribute to our shared civic life, don’t forget: it can be FUN, even now.
